Leaky hose leads to hash farm

Fire-fighters have discovered a massive marijuana cultivation set up in a living room in a flat in Vienna.Tenants of the housing estate in the Favoriten district called the local fire brigade after water started dripping from the ceiling yesterday (Mon). The incident exposed an illegal indoor hashish farm maintained by a 26-year-old man living on the floor above the affected apartment. Police explained a defunct hose of the plantation’s complex watering system was responsible for the leak.Officers confiscated dozens of cannabis plants and several infra-red heaters as well as some ventilators in the man’s apartment. The suspect, who was not put in custody, faces charges for violating anti-drug bylaws. The growth, sale and consumption of cannabis, marijuana and hashish is illegal in Austria. The unplanned crackdown comes around half a year after an extensive cannabis farm set up illegally at an apartment in the Vienna-Simmering district was destroyed by a fire sparked by a technical failure in its air-conditioning system.
