Winter Card making skiiing easier in Lower Austria

 Rebecca Musgrave

Lower Austria is preparing to implement a new Winter Card which will make skiing in the area all the more appealing. The transferable lift pass can be used in seven ski areas in Lower Austria for three or five days and carries the motto “Skiing – when I want, wherever I want”. The popular ski destinations are also encouraging children to participate in “Primary schools for the Snow”, where children can discover the joy of skiing and winter sports.

Government official, Petra Bohulslav (ÖVP), who is responsible for the project, hopes that some 13,000 primary school children will take part in the primary schools campaign. Bohulslav believes the project to be hugely important in keeping visitor numbers to the area up. Children who have learnt to ski in Lower Austria, she hopes, will come back to ski as adults.

Lower Austria is popular as an area for winter sports due to its easy accessibility and relatively short distance from most parts of eastern Austria. There are around 20 ski resorts, over 200 kilometres (km) of slopes and more than 100 lifts in the area. There are also over 20 ski schools. All of this can be accessed with the Winter Card which will cost 94 Euros for adults for three days and 138 Euros for 5 days.
