Ex-Wacker star Grüner dies from cancer
Former Wacker Innsbruck captain Theo Grüner lost a long battle against cancer yesterday (Tues).Officials at the Austrian Bundesliga club announced today the ex-midfielder passed away at Innsbrucks University Clinic yesterday afternoon at the age of 33.Grüner, who joined the club from Austria Lustenau in 2003, had to retire from professional football after being diagnosed with kidney cancer three years ago. He became the clubs executive manager after successful chemotherapy measures in 2008 before his condition worsened again.The Austrian Football Federation (ÖFB) said that a minute of silence will be held ahead of the kickoff of the national teams friendly against Switzerland in Klagenfurt on 11 August.The five matches of the fourth league round this weekend will be preceded by a minute of silence as well, according to Austrian Bundesliga officials.
