Bees latest exhibit at the Secession

A swarm of 15,000 bees from the Austrian Mostviertel region have been moved to a new home – the roof of Austrian iconic art gallery the Secession.

The bees join the growing number of city bees under the control of the inner-city beekeepers.

The hive was sponsored by the Erste Foundation which decided to back the project because of the use of the bee in its logo.

The picture shows bee keepers Heidrun Singer and Friedrich Haselsteiner as they place the hive under the golden dome of the Secession.

The secession building in Vienna was built in 1897 by Joseph Maria Olbrich for exhibitions of the secession group

The group, also known as the Union of Austrian Artists, or Vereinigung Bildender Künstler Österreichs, was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists who had resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists, housed in the Vienna Künstlerhaus.

This movement included painters, sculptors, and architects. The first president of the Secession was Gustav Klimt, and Rudolf von Alt was made honorary president.
