Post clerk jailed over €100,000 thefts

A former post distribution centre employee has been sentenced to eight months in jail for stealing cash out of letters for 20 years.The 50-year-old man, who was suspended earlier this year when his wrongdoings were uncovered, was found guilty of taking cash and valuables worth 100,000 Euros from letters and parcels.The defendant claimed in court in Klagenfurt, Carinthia, that he did not take more than 1,000 Euros in cash.The state prosecutors revealed in the trial that the man spent most of the stolen cash on restaurant visits and sex with prostitutes. He was sentenced to 24 months in prison of which 16 months were suspended.Earlier this month, it emerged that a 20-year-old postman from Schwertberg, Upper Austria, could have lied about two armed robberies of which he allegedly was the victim.Prosecutors have already started investigating the issue.
