Alpine Germany gets UAE order

A leading Austrian building firm’s German branch has won a 82-million-Euro assignment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).Alpine Bau GmbH (Alpine) said today (Mon) that its German representation Alpine Bau Deutschland AG will build office buildings, storage sites and production facilities in Abu Dhabi for Borouge, which is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Austrian chemicals and plastics company Borealis.Alpine announced the order was worth 82 million Euros, adding that construction will start later this year and be finished by the third quarter of 2013.Alpine carried out building assignments worth 1.39 billion Euros around the world in the first six month of 2010. The Salzburg-based company, which belongs to Spanish construction giant Fomento de Construcciones Y Contratas (FCC) has more than 15,000 employees, of whom 8,200 work in Austria.Works council chiefs at Strabag SE, one of Alpine’s biggest rivals in the Austrian and European construction sector, are up in arms over news that dozens of employees may be dismissed.Jaroslav Katzer, head of Vienna-based Strabag’s Czech department, said last week that up to 15 per cent of the 2,500 people who currently work for Strabag in the country could be dismissed in the near future. He argued Strabag was forced to react to a 10 to 15 per cent decline in order value.Strabag was first listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange (WBAG) in 2007.One Strabag stock cost 20.93 Euros at midday today.
