Man rescued from crevasse after 14 hours

A Hungarian ski tourer was rescued after 14 hours stuck in a crevasse in East Tyrol, Austria at the weekend.

The skier plunged 10 metres into the crevasse – a friend notified rescuers who after 14 hours were able to get the man out.

The conditions were particularly difficult due to extreme weather conditions. Rescue helicopters were unable to be used due to extreme weather conditions on the glacier.

The skier was conscious and was able to communicate with the rescuers throughout the rescue operation.

The skier from Budapest escaped with slight hypothermia and cuts and bruises.

The man was doing a tour of the Großvenediger mountain – which lies at 3,657 metres and is Austria’s fourth highest peak on the border of Salzburg and East Tyrol.
