German skier dies in 50-metre fall

A young German skier died after an accident yesterday (Mon).The 22-year-old tourist lost control as he skied down a slope at high speed in the Tyrolean winter sport resort of Hochgurgl. He skidded off the piste and plunged down a 50-metre descent. Witnesses carried out first aid measures immediately, but the holidaymaker had already died of serious internal injuries when a team of paramedics reached the scene.A nine-year-old girl from Poland is meanwhile recovering in hospital after she collided with another skier on Sunday. The child suffered an open wound on her backside, while the unidentified adult fled.Austrian police have warned ahead of each winter sport period that it is a breach of international skiing laws and a criminal offence to leave the site of an accident on the slopes without checking the condition of the other persons involved.More than 50,000 skiers and snowboarders have ended up in clinics across the Austrian Alps in every skiing season in the past years.
