Taxi robber suspect tracked down 10 years on

Police have detained a woman suspected of having robbed and injured a taxi driver 10 years ago, it has emerged.Officials in Vienna said today (Weds) that the 39-year-old was arrested in the Lower Austrian district of Krems yesterday evening. She is in custody in Vienna’s Josefstadt prison awaiting a trial regarding the crime in Vienna-Währing in which a taxi driver was seriously injured in 2001.The woman was tracked down as cold case investigators double-checked DNA databases and unsolved crime cases. The suspect is also linked to a burglary in Vienna-Landstraße in 2004. She denies any involvement in either of the incidents, a spokesman for the police in Vienna said.Meanwhile, state prosecutors called for a stricter punishment after a court in Vienna sentenced a man to seven and a half years in prison for robbing three cab drivers. The indebted and unemployed criminal threatened drivers with a knife or punched them in the face in the night-time incidents in 2010. He fled with sums between 37 and 350 Euros in the robberies – but lost most of the money betting on sports. The 22-year-old said in court that he was “ashamed” of what he did.The prosecutor decided to appeal the verdict as they considered it as inadequately low.
