Romania minus Mutu face Italy in Klagenfurt

Shamed Fiorentina star Adrian Mutu will not be part of the Romanian team taking on 2006 world champions Italy in a friendly in Austria tomorrow (Weds).Manager Razvan Lucescu decided not to call up the 31-year-old striker who recently made a comeback following a nine-months suspension for doping, according to a report by the Romanian Times.The Romanian 23-member squad set to clash with Italy (kickoff: 8.30pm) in Klagenfurt’s Hypo Group Arena – one of Austria’s four Euro2008 venues – features eight players competing in international leagues including Inter defender Cristian Chivu and VfB Stuttgart striker Ciprian Marica.Romania lost 1-2 against Austria in a 2010 World Cup qualifier at the same stadium in April 2009. It was the first match with Dietmar Constantini in the hot seat after Czech Karel Brückner resigned as coach of the Austrian team.Romania finished the six-team qualifying group in fifth while Austria reached third place behind Serbia and France.Also on Wednesday (kickoff: 8.30pm; live on ORF 1), Austria will meet Greece in a friendly at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium.The match will be a special occasion for Austrian keeper Jürgen Macho who is under contract with Athens club Panonios. The 33-year-old, who performed for Austria in the Euro2008, previously played for the team’s city rivals AEK Athens.
