Donations call for Romanian’s AKH lung transplant

A young Romanian scholar is fighting for his life and needs help to raise money for a second lung transplant five years after a first transplant at Vienna General Hospital (AKH).Titu Anghel, 30, needs 40,000 Euros of a total of 70,000 Euros in order to be put on the waiting list for a new transplant. The moment he has the money, he can be put on the waiting list and, when a compatible lung becomes available, it must be transplanted within four hours.Anghel had a lung transplant in 2005 at AKH after a long ordeal spent finding financing. He needed it because he had been suffering from a lung illness that could not be cured (lung fibrosis) and could not breath anymore. The transplanted lungs are working at only 40 per cent of capacity and failing. He needs surgery in Vienna because such transplants are not possible in Romania owing to lack of specialists and equipment.Titu, who is a faculty member in the geography department at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca after receiving his PhD last year, told the Romanian Times today (Thurs): “I don’t like being a vegetable. I didn’t want anyone to know because I don’t like being felt sorry for. I like to help people, but I don’t want to be the one to be helped.”Colleagues and friends in Cluj have set up an online blog with his story in an attempt to help him raise the necessary money.Donations may be made via Banca Comerciala Romana (BCR): Titu Anghel, Euro currency: RO74RNCB01800437057 10001.
