A car thief tried to escape police doing 200 kilometres per hour (kph) yesterday (Thurs) on the A1 motorway in Salzburg.
Europe-wide investigators reported that the Polish man who had stolen a luxury car worth at least 45,000 Euros in Switzerland shortly before, overtook other vehicles on the service lane and the green area of the motorway.
The thief managed to shake off his police pursuers that way and eventually left the car near the motorway exit Thalgau, Salzburg, and tried to escape on foot but was arrested when police noticed him trying to hitchhike hours later.
A police spokesperson reported that the thief had not been very informative in his first interrogation sessions.
Police noticed the stolen car in Salzburg because it had stolen license plates.
