Swede dies in skiing accident

A 46-year-old skier from Sweden died after he came off the slope at high speed on Saturday.The man was racing down the piste in St. Anton am Arlberg, Tyrol, with two friends. The group jumped over the edge and down a steep descent on one side of the slope. He died due to the serious internal injuries and broken bones sustained when he landed on his back after the 30-metre jump, officials announced today (Mon).His pals got away with slight injuries. Police did not say whether the men were wearing skiing helmets.It is the second time in a few weeks that a Swedish holidaymaker has been killed in a skiing accident in Austria after the death of a 23-year-old last month. The man, who wore a helmet, died instantly after jumping over an edge in Dorfgastein, Salzburg.More than 50,000 skiers and snowboarders have ended up in clinics across the Austrian Alps during every skiing season in the past years.Around 57,000 skiers and snowboarders were hospitalised in 2009 after 58,200 were injured in accidents on slopes in Austria in the previous year.
