Sport goods sales up by more than three per cent

Austria’s sporting goods retail sector achieved above-average growth last year, it has been announced.Branch officials said today (Fri) that the sector managed to increase its business activities by 3.3 per cent year on year. They underlined that the country’s retail sector grew by just 2.2 per cent at the same time.Experts said sport equipment shops’ Christmas sale activities benefited from the snowy conditions in Austria as the wintry weather tempted many shoppers to splash out on skiing gear and outfits. They added that Austrians’ strong spending power and foreigners coming to the country to do their Christmas shopping here helped the sport goods retail branch as well.Long-term statistics reveal that Austrians are spending more and more money on summertime sporting goods while cutting back on winter activity expenditure. Detailed analysis of 2010 business figures however shows that the sales of winter sport goods still comprises more than 50 per cent of overall sales at Intersport, Sports Experts and other sports shop chains in Austria.Dozens of Austrian sport equipment manufacturers will present their latest product developments at the International Trade Fair for Sporting Goods and Sports Fashion (ispo) in Munich, Germany, starting this Sunday.
