Austria beats Turkey as heatwave lingers on
Austrian towns registered higher temperatures than Turkish holiday hotspots around midday today (Mon), according to Austrian meteorologists.Experts at Viennas Centre for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) said weather stations in Neusiedl am See at Lake Neusiedl, Burgenland, and St. Andrä im Lavanttal in Carinthia registered 35 degrees centigrade.They said this was more than temperatures reached in Izmir, Turkey, and Samos, Greece, which reached 34.4 and 34.6 degrees centigrade.ZAMG forecasters added Lignano Sabbiadoro at the Adriatic Sea in northern Italy registered “only” 30.6 degrees centigrade around midday today. They however stressed that temperatures were significantly higher a few kilometres into the country since the seas activities caused some cooling effect.The German capital Berlin saw mercury rising to a whopping 38 degrees centigrade today, while temperatures in Spans Barcelona made “just” 31.2 degrees centigrade.ZAMG experts said the next few days will remain stifling hot across Austria, with a small chance of thunderstorms in the Alps only.Doctors have advised elderly and sick people to stay indoors around midday and young and old to drink sufficiently during the heatwave.Vienna officials meanwhile announced residents can order free fridge thermometers to ensure temperatures within their refrigerators did not surpass eight degrees centigrade.They said citizens would receive their own thermometer within days after calling +43 1 400 080 90.The citys MA 38 food and consumer affairs office said they had decided to give away thermometers for free to those interested since many fridges would not feature temperature indicators.
