Christmas markets become New Year markets in Vienna

As Christmas fades once again into the background and New Year takes precedence the Christmas markets in the capital Vienna have transformed overnight into New Year markets.

There are now officially five New Year markets which sell a range of lucky charms and fireworks and these have been joined by 336 street stalls that are also selling the good luck charms for locals and tourists to use to welcome in the New Year.

All of the New Year markets need to have a minimum of 10 stalls of which no more than a third can be devoted to the serving of food and drink.

These are located at Mahlerstraße, the Mariahilfer Kirche, the Favoriten pedestrian zone, Schloss Schönbrunn and Franz-Jonas-Platz in Floridsdorf.

Further markets are set to open on Thursday 27th December. They are usually open from six o’clock the morning until 10 p.m.
