Austrian skier Matthias Mayer of Austria has won the final World Cup downhill in Switzerland today, coming in ahead of Italy’s Christof Innerhofer and US skier Ted Ligety.
Twenty-three-year-old Matthias Mayer is an Olympic champion who won a surprise gold medal in the men’s downhill at the Sochi Winter Games just a few weeks ago.
Today’s win was Mayer’s first World Cup win, crossing the finish line in just 1 minute 29.99 seconds.
Aksel Lund Svindal from Norway came in fifth place, retaking his lead in the overall World Cup standings. He is followed by Canadian Erik Guay with 368 points and Hannes Reichelt of Austria with 360 points.
