Football talent dies in car crash

Fans and officials of a Viennese football club are bemoaning the death of an up-and-coming player.Versatile striker Filip Mendes, his brother and three cousins passed away in a traffic accident in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rennweger SV announced today (Tues). Sport newspapers report that the 23-year-old Croat planned to marry his pregnant girlfriend.Rennweger SV – who play their home matches in Landstraße district – are currently in 15th place in the 16-team Wiener Liga, the fourth-highest division in Austrian football.The death of Mendes comes just weeks after the body of Ernst Weber was discovered on a railroad track in Lower Austria.The legendary manager – who coached various Austrian national youth squads and the country’s women’s national team – died after he was hit by a train near Wiener Neustadt on 6 April. It is unclear whether the 62-year-old committed suicide.Weber had to undergo more than 40 chemotherapy sessions to beat lymph gland cancer in 2002.
