Fischbacher gets Salzburg gong

Olympic champion Andrea Fischbacher has been awarded Salzburg’s Sportswoman of 2010 award.The skier – who claimed the gold medal in the Super-G competition of last year’s Vancouver Olympic Games – was honoured in a ceremony attended by hundreds of fans, businesspeople, politicians and artists at Salzburg Airport yesterday evening (Thurs). She was also awarded the Austrian Sportwoman of the Year title in a ceremony in Vösendorf near Vienna last November. Tennis ace Jürgen Melzer was awarded Austria’s Sportsman of the Year prize at the same time.Nordic combined ace Bernhard Gruber – who won gold in the Olympic 4 x 5 kilometres (km) team event and bronze in the 10 km individual large hill competition – was named the province’s Sportsman of the Year.Pierre Pagé, the Canadian manager of 2009/2010 hockey champs EC Red Bull Salzburg, was awarded Coach of the Year, while retired sailor Hubert Raudaschl was honoured for his lifetime achievements.Martin Hinteregger, 18, of Austrian Football Bundesliga title holders Red Bull Salzburg was named Salzburg’s Rookie of the Year. The Under-19s national team defender secured a regular spot in the Bulls’ starting line-up this season. Hinteregger’s team are currently third in the 10-team league. They will face LASK Linz at home in the 27th of 36 rounds tomorrow.
