Mind-controlled prostheses carrier dies
The first person in the world who controlled his prosthetic arms solely with his thoughts has died two days after a car crash, it has emerged.Doctors at the LKH clinic in Graz, Styria, announced today (Fri) that Christian Kandlbauer passed away yesterday. The 23-year-old sustained serious head injuries after losing control of his Subaru on a main road near the spa town of Bad Waltersdorf last Tuesday.His car burst into flames when it crashed into a tree. Kandlbauer was saved by a quick-thinking truck driver who stopped and hauled him from the mangled wreck.The Styrian was the first person in the world to receive a new type of prostheses after he lost both arms after a massive electric shock five years ago. Nerves harvested from his arms were attached to his chest muscles in a six-hour surgery by Austrian and American doctors.
