WU remains closed after fire

Vienna’s University of Economics and Business (WU) remains shut due to technical problems after a blaze broke out at its transformer room last Monday.WU bosses had planned to reopen the institution for lectures today (Weds), but technicians failed to restore its energy supply last night.Officials said the fire caused only minor damage, adding that all electronic device damaged by the blaze have already been replaced.Ernst Eichinger of federal property owner and manager Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG) said the cause of the fire was still unclear.Eichinger stressed that university chiefs were happy with how the evacuation of the hundreds of students had happened on Monday. The building was only recently equipped with additional emergency staircases. It was the second time a fire broke out at the WU in five years. A Vienna resident was handed a six-year jail term for arson in 2007 after large parts of the building were devastated by a blaze in 2005.WU is set to move in at a new location currently built at the city’s Prater park in Leopoldstadt district in three years.
