More attempted illegal entries at Austrian-German border recorded

The number of people stopped trying to illegally enter Germany via Austria is soaring.Police in the German State of Bavaria said today (Fri) officials prevented 2,800 attempts of people trying to enter the country illegally from Austria. This is a 15 per cent year on year increase, they stressed.Officials added there were 270 prevented attempts of human trafficking in the Lake Constance area alone last year.Bavarian authorities also said more than 2,800 offences like damage to public property, theft and fare-dodging were charged in 2009 on trains travelling between Austria and Germany.Police added that in total they registered 6,500 criminal acts committed on the German-Austrian border in 2009.Right-wing media and the opposition Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) have accused European Union (EU) bosses of doing little as crime numbers soar following the opening of borders in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) as part of the European Schengen agreement in 2007.
