Avalanche sweeps away three at ski race

An avalanche that decimated a free-style race between 50 skiers and snowboarders injured three.The race, which started at 1pm on Saturday in an off-piste area near Ischgl in Tyrol’s Landeck district ended in disaster when it triggered a 90 metre-wide avalanche that swept away three of the participants, police said.Two were partially buried, and a third who was completely buried was quickly dug out of the snow.After it was decided to restart the competition, a collision then resulted in serious injury to several other contestants.The leader fell when jumping over a snow cornice, and several others close behind him ran into him or collided with each other.Three rescue helicopters took the injured to local hospitals. Police said the organiser of the event was under investigation.
