Burgtheater stages Shakespeare comedy

An acclaimed German version of William Shakespeare’s celebrated comedy “Twelfth Night” or “What You Will” is now on at a Viennese theatre.Press voiced concerns whether the ensemble of the Burgtheater – widely regarded as one of the most important theatres in German-speaking Europe – can meet high expectations put into the eagerly awaited production called “Was ihr wollt” in German.Previews claimed the star factor of the play may be too high as audience darlings like Maria Happel, Michael Maertens, Nicholas Ofczarek and Joachim Meyerhoff co-star in the play. Most critics however stressed after last month’s premiere that the actors can pull it off. “The best ensemble makes the best theatre,” one article pointed out.Burgtheater chief Matthias Hartmann, who directed the play, has also been lauded for his efforts in reviews. One theatre critic wrote that the German “managed to exploit the Burgtheater cast’s full comical potential.”Many upcoming performances of the play are already sold out.
