Vienna hotel prices up as spring creeps in

Viennese hotels have introduced significant price increases as temperatures are on the rise, it has been revealed.Travel platform Trivago (www.trivago.co.uk/hotelprices) found today (Thurs) that a standard double room in the Austrian capital currently costs an average 134 Euros after just 99 Euros last month and 104 Euros in January. Trivago research shows that the current price is also 11 per cent higher than average room rates in March 2010.With 10.2 million, hotels in Vienna recorded more overnight stays than ever before in 2010.The Trivago Hotel Price Index (THPI) also shows that Geneva (269 Euros) in Switzerland is the most expensive place in Europe as far as the average price for a standard double room is concerned, followed by London (172 Euros), Great Britain, and Milan (164 Euros) in Italy.Meanwhile, Austrian statistics institution Statistik Austria said the number of overnight stays registered across the country was 2.1 per cent lower between November 2010 and February 2011 than in the same period of the previous winter holiday season. Around 42.59 million overnight stays were booked in hotels and guesthouses in Austria’s nine provinces between November 2010 and last month, according to the agency.Statistik Austria figures also show that – with 10.63 million – more tourists than ever before came to the country in that time span. The trend to stay shorter has however resulted in an overall drop of overnight stays.
