Salzburg set to spend €4mn on winter marketing

Salzburg will invest almost four million Euros in tourism marketing initiatives for the upcoming winter season, it has been announced.Leo Bauernberger, head of the province’s tourism board, said today (Tues) almost four million Euros will be spent on various marketing and advertising activities in Austria and abroad as the winter sport season approaches.Salzburg’s tourism councillor Wilfried Haslauer of the People’s Party (ÖVP) said he was cautiously optimistic about booking figures for the cold season. “We are recording positive developments,” he said about the number of reservations being made in important markets like Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic. The Alpine province looks back on the third-best season in history as it recorded 13.8 million overnight stays last winter.Bauernberger and Haslauer said they expected an extra boost by Air Berlin’s decision to offer direct flights from the German city of Hanover and London-Stansted to Salzburg. An overall 56.1 million overnight stays were registered between November 2009 and March of this year across Austria, up by 1.3 per cent compared to the previous winter season. The Austrian winter tourism industry has been just as strong as its summer holiday business over the past few years. Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) analysis has shown that, with 661,000 jobs, one in five jobs in Austria are directly or indirectly dependent on the country’s tourism.
