Old cooking oil causes plane to emergency land

A report into an emergency landing of a Lufthansa plane at Linz airport after the pilot reported a strange smell last week has revealed that it was cooking oil that had gone off.

The oil was found in the on-board oven on the aircraft. When the oven was switched on in flight the smell spread into the cockpit and throughout the aircraft.

The pilot made the decision to land in Linz rather than carry on the flight to Munich, Germany.

Passengers complained of headaches when the strong smell and light smoke started filling the cabin.

The flight with 115 passengers on board was operated by German airline Lufthansa in a trip from Sofia to Munich.

After medical checks on the passengers they continued their journey via bus to Munich.
