Fifteen people found truck with frozen food

A driver discovered 15 people in the refrigerated container of his lorry this morning (Tues), authorities in Tyrol have said.The man, 46, called the police after hearing knocking sounds coming from the back of the vehicle.Fifteen people were freed from the subzero temperature container at a petrol station car park in Brixlegg and rushed to a hospital in Kufstein where doctors are currently treating them for serious hypothermia. Their nationalities have not been disclosed by authorities. The people are believed to be illegal immigrants who planned to seek political asylum in Austria.Police said the truck driver started his journey in Italy. The destination for his delivery of deep-frozen food was not revealed.Only last week, a 35-year-old Italian man was sentenced to 18 months in prison for trying to smuggle four illegal immigrants from Afghanistan through Austria to Germany.An overall 11,000 people from various countries applied for asylum in Austria in 2010. The country’s authorities granted asylum to around one out of five of the 15,800 refugees who came to Austria in 2009.
