U-Bahn train kills man

Service on a busy underground line in Vienna had to be abandoned yesterday evening (Mon) after a person fell on the tracks.The unidentified man was hit and killed by an oncoming U6 line train after plunging on the rails at Burggasse station around 6.30pm, police in the capital said today.Public transport agency Wiener Linien reacted by stopping service between Westbahnhof and Josefstädter Straße station for around an hour after the incident. The company set up special bus service on the affected connection to reduce the time loss of passengers had to cope with due to the occurrence.Officials did not give any information about the killed man’s identity and on whether the background of the incident has been clarified. Reports have it that investigators assume the man committed suicide.Only last week, service on the U3 line was stopped for 30 minutes after passengers said they smelt smoke while on U-Bahn trains driving through tunnels. Operations were put back to normal after firemen failed to find any sources of fire.Wiener Linien recorded almost 839 million passengers in 2010.
