Prosecutor appeals jail term verdict for taxi robber
Prosecutors have called for tougher punishments after a court in Vienna sentenced a man to more than seven years in jail for robbing three cab drivers.The unemployed man, who amassed debts with a gambling addiction, threatened taxi drivers with a knife or punched them in the face close in the night-time incidents last summer. He fled with sums between 37 and 350 Euros in the incidents but lost most of the money a short while later on sport betting activities.The 22-year-old, who was arrested close to a betting office after his final coup, told judges today (Weds): “Im ashamed about what I did, and I regret it very much.”The state prosecutor decided to appeal the verdict of seven years and six months in prison as she considered it as inadequately low.Meanwhile, investigations into two attacks on taxi drivers in Vienna earlier this month continue.Police said the two cab drivers sustained minor injuries when they were attacked by a male criminal with scissors. The offender escaped with undisclosed amounts of cash. Investigators believe that one person is behind both incidents.
