Herzog says Werder must snatch Arnautovic

Former national team captain Andreas Herzog has appealed to bosses at his former club Werder Bremen to sign Marko Arnautovic. The 21-year-old striker is currently looking for a new club after leaving Champions League winners Inter after just one year. Arnautovic is still owned by his former club Twente Enschede. But the Vienna-born player already made clear he will not return to the Dutch side under any circumstances. Now Herzog, who played for German Bundesliga giants Werder for more than seven years, said: “If Werder get the chance to sign Marko, they definitely should take the opportunity.”Herzog, 41, and manager of Austria’s Under-21s team of which Arnautovic is a key member, praised the striker’s skills. “He’s tall, quick and technically strong,” he told German newspaper Bild.”He’s lacking experience. The step from Enschede to Inter was a big one. But he was on the bench in important matches like against Barcelona. This confirms (outgoing Inter manager José) Mourinho’s appreciation,” the Werder legend said.Asked whether it was true that Arnautovic was a difficult character, Herzo said: “(Werder coach) Thomas Schaaf has a sure instinct for young players.”Arnautovic has also been linked with VfL Wolfsburg since Steve McClaren, his former coach at Twente, was recently named new manager of the 2008/2009 German Bundesliga champions.Rapid Vienna bosses meanwhile announced Montenegrin midfielder Branko Boskovic will leave the club after four years. It is unclear for which club the 30-year-old will play next season. Sports press claim Boskovic has offers from international sides as well as by Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg.Mattersburg officials said Patrick Bürger will return to the club after having played for second league team Hartberg for the past two seasons.”Other clubs wanted to sign me too, but Mattersburg showed the strongest interest,” the 22-year-old striker said.
