Working up an appetite in East Tyrol

With some 357 kilometres of slopes between the south side of the Alps and Carinthia, East Tyrol is the perfect skiing destination for all sun and snow lovers. Those who work up an appetite on the slopes however are also well provided for at the dramatic Adler Lounge, perched on the top of the Cimaross peak.

The “Ski Hit Osttirol” ski pass gives winter sports fans complete access to eight ski areas in East Tyrol and Carinthia throughout the season with good snow still being enjoyed in the resorts as late as May. The largest ski area in East Tyrol, recommended as the start for any ski safari in the area, is the Grossglockner Resort Kals Mattrei with 110 kilometres of slopes and the longest downhill run stretching for 11.3 kilometres. If all this winter activity enjoyed on the endless slopes stimulates an appetite then top-class fare lies at the top of the slopes at a height of 2,000 metres.

The Adler Lounge aims to bring together “the mountain, architecture and enjoyment”, offering its guests, staying in the small number of hotel rooms, and day visitors a combination of modern and traditional culinary treats with 360 degree views of the snow covered mountains of Tyrol.

Whether you want to enjoy the Adler Lounge’s mountain breakfast before hitting the slopes or the Tyrolean cuisine of head chef Walter Hartweger over lunch, the restaurant and bar are the perfect slope side pit stop. The Adler Lounge will also host a fashion show for designer Margret Schiestl’s label “Tyrolean Adlerin” on 25 March.

Next stop on the East Tyrol Ski Safari should be the Mölltaler glacier. Carinthia’s only glaciated ski area has some 71 kilometres of slopes and provides guaranteed snow throughout the season. For sustenance on this next leg of the journey there is the Panorama Restaurant Eissee. The modern restaurant built of glass and steel stands on the edge of the glacier lake and with its enormous terrace provides a great location for enjoying the winter sun.
