An award-winning journalist has been granted political asylum in Austria after a four-year legal battle.Jovan Mirilo helped the International Court of Justice in The Hague in the Netherlands in investigating the Balkan War massacre in Srebrenica – which occurred in 1995 – by providing the institution with a video containing vital evidence in 2005. The writer fled his native Serbia in the same year as he feared for his life due to threats by nationalists.Vienna’s Court for Asylum Issues overruled a previous decision by the federal asylum agendas authority, according to reports from today (Weds). The development means Mirilo – who appealed the initial verdict – will be allowed to stay in Austria.
