Avalanche hospitalises skier

An off-piste skier has been hospitalised after coming under an avalanche near Tux in Tyrol’s Ziller Valley.Mountain rescue authorities in the province’s Schwaz district said today (Weds) the Austrian suffered serious injuries to his pelvis when he was buried by the avalanche which raced down off groomed slopes at the Hintertuxer glacier this morning. They said he was transferred to a clinic in Innsbruck via helicopter, adding that two companions of the skier got away uninjured.Authorities in the Austrian Alps warned earlier this week that the risk of avalanches would rise “significantly” since various shifts of fallen snow may move as temperatures edged up during the past few days.Between 10 and 40 people were killed by avalanches in the country’s mountains in the past years.
