Steel joist theft reported
Plucky thieves made off with steel girders weighing almost 30 tons, it has been revealed.Officials in Eggelsberg, Upper Austria, said today (Thurs) that 14 stainless steel joists each weighing two tons disappeared from a local companys indoor storage site during the night. The thieves are suspected of lifting the objects up with a special crane truck before hauling them away with another lorry. The affected firm has refused to reveal the total amount of damages, while police continue to investigate the theft. The incident comes on the back of a string of metal and copper thefts.Only last month, two Romanians were arrested for trying to smuggle 750 kilograms of stolen crude metal worth 18,000 Euros out of the country. The pair’s vehicle was checked by custom officials in on the Austrian-Hungarian border in Nickelsdorf. It is thought that the thieves planned to sell the material on the black market in their homeland.
