Besiktas call off Vienna fixture

Besiktas cancelled a friendly against Austrian Bundesliga vice champions Austria Vienna. The Turkish giants announced today (Fri) they will not meet the team coached by former defender Karl Daxbacher at Vienna’s Franz Horr Stadium on 8 July. The club failed to give reasons for their change of mind, but it is assumed the twist had to do with the recent assignment of Bernd Schuster as new Besiktas coach. The former German international – who played for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona among other clubs – could have different plans than Mustafa Denizli, his predecessor as Besiktas coach, than testing against Austria Vienna. The pressure is on for Schuster after the tradition-rich club finished the season in a rather disappointing fourth place.Daxbacher announced that his team will play FC Lokomotiv Moscow in Bischofshofen, Salzburg, on 27 June before meeting Dinamo Bucharest in the Salzburg town of Leogang three days later. He added that his side will also play a friendly against Maccabi Haifa FC from Israel on 3 July.Viennese amateur club SC Columbia Floridsdorf meanwhile announced they managed to arrange a meeting with German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on 17 July. Around 7,000 football enthusiasts flocked to the club’s ground in Floridsdorf district last summer to watch them clashing with Premiership giants Arsenal (1-7).
