Cuba coming to Vienna
By Rebecca Musgrave
Cuba is set to arrive in Vienna in March 2012 to wash away the winter blues. The MuseumsQuartier will play host to “The Bar at Buena Vista” hailed as “The grandfathers of Cuban music” at the beginning of March, continuing the Caribbean celebration with Dance Company, “Ballet Revolución” later in the month.
The legends of Cuban music “The Bar at Buena Vista” will be performing their tribute to old Havana in the capital for just four nights. Visitors can expect an energetic performance from the supposed “Grandfathers”, with music renowned for keeping their audiences on their feet all night. Colourful costumes and dancers create the feel of 1940s and 50s Cuba, telling a story as much as playing music. The legendary frontman, Reynaldo Creagh and his fellow musicians continue to tour around the world and will appear in Vienna from 2 to 4 March 2012.
For those who would rather leave the dancing up to someone else, the “Ballet Revolución” is to be performed for the first time in Austria, from 5 to 18 March 2012. Dancers from the National Cuban Ballet School began their first world tour this summer and have continued to wow audiences with their “explosive fusion of ballet, contemporary dance and hip-hop”. The company is made up of ballet dancers from around the world and continues to combine African, Spanish and Russian dance techniques to put on a truly individual performance. Audiences will undoubtedly recognise the music from the live band who accompanies the dancers with hits from Shakira, Beyoncé and Ricky Martin.
