Dürers Young Hare on show in the Albertina after 10 years

The famous painting of a hare by German artist Dürer is being put on show in the Albertina in Vienna from March after ten years of not being exhibited.

The painting is being presented as part of an exhibition looking at the collection in the context of the lives of the founders of the gallery, Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen and Archduchess Maria Christine.

The exhibition “The Founding of the Albertina. Between Dürer and Napoleon” will cover the period from 1738 to 1822 and as well as Dürer’s ‘Young Hare’ it will include pieces from Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Rubens and Caspar David Friedrich.

Items from other museums will also be presented on loan, including the hat worn by Napoleon that he wore during the Battle of Eylau.

The collections of Duke Albert and Archduchess as well as the lives of other art collectors and dealers in that period will be explored alongside the images, giving visitors an overall impression of the world of nobility and art during the Albertina’s earliest years.
