New 3m mountain train route planned

The Ötscherland-Express train that travels the mountainous part of the Ybbstalbahn is to be made ready for the current season with a 3 million Euro investment.

From July passengers can travel with the Narrow gauge railway from Kienberg Gaming to Göstling an der Ybbs.

The Ötscherland-Express is Austria's steepest railway and the new investment will also make it more attractive with another 10 km of extra track being added. Until the new season starts an estimated 1000 wooden sleepers will need to be replaced.

Then from 7 July the Ötscherland-Express travels Saturday and Sunday from Kienberg-Gaming to Göstling an der Ybbs.

It is hoped that the investment will attract new passengers. The provincial government is also hoping that it will increase the tourism potential of the region.

They say that the mountain route is spectacular and that the Ötscherland-Express requires more than 311 m to reach its high point and then head back down through the mountains, crossing two bridges on the way.
