St. Pölten to host Body Building WM
The Lower Austrian capital of St Pölten is to host the body building world championships next year it has been announced.
More than 150 participants from 40 different countries will take part in the competition from the 15th to the 18th of November 2013 in St Pölten.
Amongst those taking part are a number of local athletes from Lower Austria.
Mayor Matthias Stadler from the SPÖ said: "It is great that St Pölten has been chosen for such a large sporting event.
According to Wolfgang Schober President of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness in Austria the negotiations have gone on for more than a year.
Other potential hosts were Brazil, Ecuador and Panama.
Schober said: "The qualifying rounds for the WM will take place at the end of October 2013. Austria will probably be represented with a team of ten athletes. We are working on achieving between 1 and 2 medals at the championships."
Classic Bodybuilding has been a discipline of the IFBB for five years.
There are five weight classes.
Lower Austrians have already had some success in this discipline. In 2010 Kurt Strohmayer
from Heidenreichstein became vice European Champion.
In 2011 Harald Schober from St. Pölten gained the same title.
In 2012 Herwig Steurer from Krems became European Champion.
The necessary infrastructure to host the competition is already in place in Lower Austria.
