Magna Wiener Neustadt vice president to resign

The future of Magna Wiener Neustadt seems uncertain as vice president Ernst Neumann is to step down.

Neumann – a close friend and business partner of club owner Frank Stronach – announced at the weekend he will retire at the end of the season.

Neumann refused to give a detailed explanation for this decision, but reports suggest that plans to build a new stadium dismissed by Wiener Neustadt decision-makers could have been behind him announcing his resignation.

Now speculations have it Stronach – who founded Austrian-Canadian car parts manufacturer Magna – is considering stopping financial support for the club.

Manfred Rottensteiner, the club’s other vice president, however denied today (Mon) that the club was in turmoil.

Magna Wiener Neustadt were promoted to the Austrian Bundesliga in 2009. They led the table earlier this season, but dropped to seventh place after three losses in a row.

Magna face fifth-placed Kapfenberg when the season continues on Saturday.

The Austrian Bundesliga table after six rounds:

SV Ried, 15 points
Wacker Innsbruck, 13
Sturm Graz, 10
Rapid Vienna, 9
Kapfenberg, 8
Austria Vienna, 8
Magna Wiener Neustadt, 7
Red Bull Salzburg, 4
LASK Linz, 3
SV Mattersburg, 3
