Melzer loses Hamburg final

Jürgen Melzer missed the chance to win his third singles title on the ATP Tour yesterday (Sun).

The Austrian number one in world tennis stood no chance against Andrej Golubew in the final of the 1,115-million Euro tournament in Hamburg. It took the unseeded Kazakh one and a half hours to beat the Lower Austrian 6-3, 7-5.

Melzer beat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy and Italians Potito Starace and Andreas Seppi among others to reach the final.

It would have been the third title for Melzer after winning the 2006 edition of the ATP event of Bucharest and last year’s Vienna BA Tennis Trophy.

Melzer, 29, said the clay soil Croatian Open in Umag will be his next tournament, followed by hard court events in Toronto, Canada, and Cincinnati, USA.
