Sex scandal-less Scharner explains hair madness
Wigan Athletic star Paul Scharner has revealed why he dyed his hair black and white last year.
The defender was attacked by some newspapers and fans for sporting a half black, half white head of hair in Austria’s friendly against Spain (1-5) last November. Critics accused him of lacking leadership. And national team coach Dietmar Constantini earlier this week announced Red Bull striker Marc Janko would replace him as the team’s captain as of now.
Austria meet Denmark in a friendly tonight (Weds).
Looking back on the public debate his controversial hairstyling caused, Scharner said yesterday: "It was just a marketing stunt to remain a discussion topic since I can’t offer any sex affairs or drink-driving scandals."
Scharner said he "felt like Enemy of the State Number One" after the criticism he was confronted with after the Spain match.
The 29-year-old is expected to have a spot in the team’s starting eleven as central defender in tonight’s match at the Ernst Happel Stadium.
