Panenka heads best foreign Rapid player ranking
By Thomas Hochwarter
Former
Poland ace Antonin Panenka has beaten stars like Dejan Savicevic and
Carsten Jancker in a newspaper’s top ten ranking of the best foreign
players at Rapid Vienna of all time.
The 60-year-old, who scored
77 goals in 172 matches between 1981 and 1985 for the club, beat ex-AC
Milan midfielder Savicevic – voted eighth – and former Bayern Munich
striker Jancker who came in tenth in the chart conducted by the Kurier.
Savicevic
ended his illustrious career at Rapid between 1999 and 2001, while
Jancker reached the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final with Rapid in 1996
before winning the Champions League with Bayern in 2001.
Current
team captain Steffen Hofmann – expected to be a key player again
tonight (Thurs) as Rapid meet Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Europa League –
was ranked second by the paper’s sports editorial.
Former
Croatian national team coach Zlatko Kranjcar – who won two league
titles, three cup wins and played one European final for Rapid Vienna
between 1984 and 1990 – came third. The current Persepolis Teheran
coach is the club’s best foreign striker of all time with 130 goals in
266 matches.
Danish striker Johnny Bjerregaard (in fourth),
Czech Rene Wagner (in fifth), ex-Yugoslavian Petar Brucic (in sixth),
Norwegian Jan-Age Fjörtoft (in seventh) and Bulgarian Trifon Ivanov (in
ninth) also made the newspaper’s ranking.
