'Bulls' march on as rivals drop points
By Thomas Hochwarter
Champions Red Bull Salzburg kept their lead in the Austrian Bundesliga as rivals dropped points yesterday (Sun).
While the "Bulls" beat Magna Wiener Neustadt 3-2, Sturm Graz lost 0-1 to Austria Vienna.
Rapid
Vienna, now in third, were 1-3 down in Linz against LASK but launched a
remarkable comeback to grab a 3-3 draw while Ried added to Austria
Kärnten’s woes by beating the bottom of the table strugglers 1-0.
Kapfenberg stay in ninth after being crushed 4-1 by Mattersburg on Saturday.
The
first half of yesterday’s top match of the round between fourth-placed
Austria Vienna and third placed Sturm Graz was an uneventful affair
livened only by Jacek Bak’s game-winning header. The goal in the 18th
minute came after a corner from captain Milenko Acimovic.
Sturm Graz – who had to do without five potential starting eleven players – failed to pose any threat to Robert Almer’s goal.
The
teams were more evenly matched in the second half, but the home side
managed to seal three points after losing three matches in a row – also
thanks to a red card for Sturm defender Martin Ehrenreich in the 64th
minute.
Austria Vienna supporters are now looking forward to the
next round’s infamous Vienna Derby when their team clash with Rapid
Vienna (22 November, 3.30pm live on ORF1 and Sky).
