SPÖ wins Krems City Council election
The SPÖ has secured the most votes in the City Council elections in Krems, Lower Austria despite a low turn out in the election on Sunday.
For the first time since 1950 the SPÖ has secured top spot in the elections in the city.
The SPÖ in Krems under the leadership of Reinhard Resch secured 16 of the 40 mandates, the same as they did five years ago. The ÖVP dropped from 20 mandates to just 15.
Mayor Inge Rinke handed in her resignation following the result on Sunday.
In the Krems City Hall six fractions will now be represented. The SPÖ had 16 mandates the same as in 2007. the ÖVP has 15 (in 2007 it was 20), the FPÖ has three (in 2007 it was 2), The KLS has 2 mandates in comparison to 1 in 2007 and the Green Party have 2 in comparison to 1 in 2007 - and the UBK (An Independent Krems Citizen Initiative) has secured two mandates.
Rinke said: "I take full responsibility for this election result and hereby announce my resignation."
Her resignation was accepted by the party.
Since 1955 Krems has been firmly in the hands of the ÖVP. The last time the SPÖ had the majority in Krems was in 1950.
Only 62.63 per cent of those eligible to vote did so - compared to 65.99 per cent in 2007.
