Campaign against waisting food
Thousands of tons of foods end up in the waste bin in Austria although some products are still consumable. Now a campaign by the Salzburg Economic Chamber (WKÖ) is aiming to bring awareness to people to turn this situation around.
In average 300 Euros worth of food is thrown away each year by every Austrian household.
Local Salzburg star Chef Joseph Illinger says that he often wonders when he sees peoples shopping cart filled with food how they can ever eat it all, even if they have a family of ten people at home.
Andrea Igler from the agency of diet safety (AGES) says that many food products arelonger fresh then the expiration date on the packet. Igler explains that especially cheese and yogurt are usually still fresh up to a couple of days later.
Overall 10,000 tons of food lands in the trash in the county of Salzburg. Otto Filippi from the Salzburg meat market says that many consumers shop with a cooling box in summer.
He says that meat is to be handled carefully and that there should not be too much time between buying the meat and putting it in the fridge at home.
Sepp Eisl from the People's Party (ÖVP) in Salzburg says that the campaign is to boost people's awareness when it comes to the value of food and their money.
