Drowning man rescued by alert bathers
Bathers managed to rescue a 51-year-old man who was drowning in the Danube near Krems, Lower Austria yesterday (Sunday).
The struggling swimmer shouted for help when he became helpless whilst swimming in the river.
Fellow bathers who heard his calls alerted people on the river in motorboats.
They managed to throw him a rescue ring and then tried to pull him on board. When this didn’t work they managed to get hold of his hands and hold him above water and notified water rescuers.
The ÖAMTC rescue helicopter C2 attended the rescue. The people in the boat were able to maneuver the man nearer to the bank. Firemen were then able to rescue the man from the water.
The man was completely exhausted and was suffering from hypothermia.
He was airlifted to hospital In Krems.
