Swan saved by vets

This young swan had to be saved by wildlife vets in Linz, Austria, after it got a fisherman's hook stuck in its bill.

The cygnet had been spotted by passers by struggling to eat on the Pleschingersee lake, a popular spot for anglers.

Water rescue spokesman Martin Haunschmidt said: "Discarded hooks and lines are a menace for birds and for swimmers too."

"Serious injuries can be caused to swimmers and wildlife if they get caught in the almost invisible fishing lines."

"Officially fishing is forbidden in the lake during bathing hours but many anglers ignored that, said Haunschmidt, adding that some used as many as six fishing rods simultaneously.
