Paneful Death

Two men were crushed to death when a lorry loaded with a massive pane of glass toppled on top of them as they fixed its tyre on the A8 motorway near Ried, Austria.

The Romanian lorry was parked on the hard shoulder of the motorway after getting a flat tyre and the driver and an Austrian mechanic from a nearby garage were working to replace the wheel when the accident happened.

A German lorry being driven by a 27-year-old hit the side of the Romanian vehicle - sending it and the glass toppling onto the two men.

Fritz Prenninger who lead the rescue operation said: "The panes of glass weighed several tonnes, the men were killed instantly, but recovering the bodies was a tough job."

The German lorry driver was taken to hospital in Ried where he was treated for shock.
